9 years

Briefly explain your running experience.
I began my running journey in 2016. When I joined Run Muskegon, I couldn’t even run a mile. My first road race was the Seaway 5K that same year, where I ended up walking most of the distance. However, after the race, I was hooked—I didn’t realize it at the time, but I had drunk the Kool-Aid! A friend encouraged me to join Run Muskegon after that experience.

It took me a few weeks to actually attend a meeting because I didn’t think I could be part of such an elite group of runners. They all looked so professional in their running gear. My friend eventually found me hiding at Top Shelf and pulled me into the hallway to attend my first meeting. A few women from the group took me under their wing, showing me the ropes of running. They helped me find the right shoes, advised me on how to dress for the winter months, and reminded me that we run year-round. I felt welcomed from day one.

Eventually, I met my original running buddy, with whom I ran my first long-distance race, a 15K at the Seaway race in 2017. Being part of this running community has transformed me, boosted my self-belief, and encouraged me to step outside my comfort zone. I am not a fast runner, but I put in the training to achieve my goals. I am proud to say that I am now an ultra-runner and a triathlete.

What experience, education, or interest do you have for serving on the Run Muskegon board?
I am currently on the Run Muskegon board, serving as the Chair of the Run Muskegon Gift Giving Committee and Coaching Breakout Committee.

What special skill or knowledge do you have to bring to the board?
My leadership, team building, teamwork, and communication skills.

What other boards do you currently serve on or have served on in the past?
I have served as the president of my church's mass gospel choir for the past six years and am a member of the wellness committee at Hilite International.

What volunteer experience do you have?
I have volunteered at several race events, community events for our church, Muskegon Heights' annual festival in the park, and the Michigan Irish Festival. I am also an active member of Women Who Care. Additionally, I volunteer with the Run Muskegon Outreach Committee, which is dedicated to serving our community. Some of our activities include Adopt-A-Highway 2-mile clean-up and projects at the Muskegon Lake Nature Preserve, among others.

What would be your goals as a board member?
My goal is to encourage the community to be active and promote a healthier lifestyle. Community members can achieve their goals by walking, riding a bike, or engaging in any form of movement. I aim to inform the community about Run Muskegon and how it is an excellent place to start working toward those goals.
